Alex has swapped his work boots for a sharp set of chef knives and is making a terrific start to his new career. In a short amount of time the ambitious protégée has already been promoted from being a kitchen hand to doing entrees and desserts for The Italian Restaurant at The Entrance.
Alex, whose former line of work as a tree lopper and labourer was cut short due to chronic health issues which prevented him from doing manual labour.
After three years of trying to find suitable employment, Alex came to Scott at Olympus Solutions member Ability Options at The Entrance. Scott saw that Alex was a very capable and driven young man. Together they sat down and set some employment goals which matched Alex’s interests and skills.
“Alex has a real passion for food and he really wanted to get a start in the hospitality industry,” said Scott, whose background in disability employment was essential in mapping out a plan to get Alex back into the workforce.
“He said he wanted to become a chef one day, and that’s exactly what we planned to do.”
After assessing several options, Scott found that The Italian Restaurant was a suitable fit, and he arranged a work trial for Alex. But it wasn’t all plain sailing from there.
“After the work trial, the employer wasn’t sure if Alex was a good fit for his business,” said Scott.
“But I knew all Alex needed was a bit more time to get use to the swing of things in a busy commercial kitchen. So I convinced the employer to give Alex three more shifts to prove himself.”
And that’s all that was needed for Alex to impress the Head Chef, who has since taken Alex under his wing. The management at The Italian Restaurant are now discussing the possibility of taking Alex on as a mature aged apprentice.
“This job has changed my life, I now don’t need to rely on Centrelink payments to help support my wife and kids said Alex. He hasn’t missed a shift yet and from all accounts his skills and confidence are growing by the day.
