Briana is a WorkReady participant from The Central Coast who joined the WorkReady program at The Entrance with a major goal to learn to be trained to use the local bus network to increase her independence and open up new doors for further education and work opportunities.
Briana confided in her WorkReady Consultant that she was feeling stressed and anxious about public transport, in particular the bus network; not knowing exactly which stops to get on at and get off at and also being worried about the possibility of catching the wrong bus.
Although a little daunted, Briana was very eager to overcome her fears and become confident in her abilities to use public transport independently. Ability Options WorkReady Consultants worked extensively with Briana to inform her of the different bus routes in her locality and then to role play the ‘worst possible’ scenario and what she could do if she caught the wrong bus or stopped at the wrong stop.
Consultants then met Briana at her home and trained her to identify which bus to catch. Briana’s Consultant caught the bus with Briana, while teaching her about public safety.
Over the next few trips Briana started to feel confident enough to walk home alone, eventually building up to the point where she did the entire trip solo on Tuesday 20th February, 2018.
Catching public transport is one of the only ways for many young people to get around. Learning to use her local public transport has opened up a whole new world of opportunities for Briana.
Briana’s story is a key example demonstrating the tailored and person centred approach WorkReady utilises to support people to confidently enter into the world of work or further education.
