Kurt is a 19 year old who wanted to build his independence in the kitchen, through improved knife skills and understanding of health and safety. Kurt is currently supported through Ability Options for his autism and intellectual disability by our Occupational Therapist and Speech Pathologist. Together, they are working to improve his gross motor skills, his motor coordination, his communication, and his sequence and planning.
To assist with Kurt’s goal of cooking for himself and his family, Kurt’s speech pathologist provided him with support in creating a visual cookbook of his favourite recipes and worked on improving his sequencing. Kurt is now regularly making a meal once a week with minimal support! These new found skills will also assist him to achieve his bigger goal of gaining employment within the hospitality industry. As Kurt has worked so hard and has made huge gains in this area, he is also working with the Occupational Therapist to independently access the community through public transport, and with his Speech Pathologist to improve his social communication skills during his work experience. Well done, Kurt! Find out more about Ability Options' Therapy Supports
