The NDIS replaces the old system of ‘block’ funds going to the organisations providing support. Instead, eligible people are assessed and allocated individualised funding. The idea is that everyone’s support needs are different and that each person can exercise choice and control over the services and supports they receive.
The NDIS is an insurance scheme as disability can affect anyone and, through the scheme, everyone who is eligible is entitled to NDIS funding. After much discussion and consultation, the NDIS was launched in a number of trial sites in July 2013; in NSW the trial site is based in the Hunter region where Ability Options have more than 300 participants.
Ability Options have a track record in NDIS, supporting over 300 participants to turn their NDIS plans into action. We have dedicated NDIS teams that include employees who are also participants. We can assist you with enquiries around how the NDIS works, how to prepare for what to expect at your planning session and making transition to the NDIS go smoothly.
If you live in an area which is NDIS-ready, the first step is to prepare for your meeting with an NDIA planner. We can provide tips, recommendations and assessments to help you all the way. Once you have been assessed you’ll receive your NDIS plan. Then it is time to work with Ability Options to tailor your plan to deliver the solutions you need and that will really work for you. We offer personalised support for you to achieve your goals, to encourage you towards greater independence and community involvement.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS is not available everywhere, yet. The scheme has been rolled out in stages, because it’s a big change and it needs to be right and sustainable for everyone. Please visit ndis.nsw.gov.au to find out when the NDIS will be available in your area.
You need to meet certain requirements to access the NDIS. If you are already a recipient of government funding for disability you are very likely to be eligible for NDIS funding. Visit the NSW government site to check your eligibility NDIS Access Checklist.
Alternatively you can phone the NDIA on 1800 800 110, or visit a National Disability Insurance Agency in your area.
