A year ago, we shared Bradley’s remarkable story, highlighting his resilience after a life-changing motorbike accident in 2017. Today, we’re excited to update you on his journey, showcasing the milestones he is achieving and the independence he continues to regain.
About six years ago, Brad was in a serious motorbike accident that left him injured and with a neurological disorder which required specialist treatment. He spent a long time going between hospitals and for three years of his life was non-verbal, being peg fed, and was aided by specialist equipment to help him go to the bathroom.
Since moving into Supported Independent Living with Ability Options, Brad has made significant strides in his day-to-day life. He worked with physiotherapists to develop his motor skills and to build his strength back up. He has also been developing his communication skills to help him become more independent.
Once reliant on significant support for every aspect of his care, he has transformed into a budding chef, enjoying quality time in the kitchen with his mum, Karen, and our dedicated staff. Cooking has become a joyful outlet for Brad, allowing him to express creativity while preparing meals for himself and others.
Art also plays a pivotal role in Bradley’s development. He embraces painting, drawing, and singing, often entertaining those around him with his unique lyrics and cheerful melodies. The staff at his Supported Independent Living (SIL) home on the Mid North Coast are impressed by his progress in communication, noting how far he has come in just a year. He is now not only developing writing skills, but engaging in lively conversations that make socialising with Brad such a joy.
Outside the home, he actively participates in kinesiology – the study of human movement, performance, and function – and breathwork sessions, forming a strong bond with his Kinesiologist, Natalie. These sessions have helped Brad enhance his memory and equip him with valuable techniques for self-regulation and pain management.
Brad demonstrates his commitment to improving his physical health in his weekly physiotherapy sessions, where he gains notable mobility. He takes pride in achieving personal care tasks with greater independence, inching closer to his goal of sitting up unassisted to put on his sling.
Mental health is also a focus for Brad. With Psychologist Erik’s support, he gains confidence and recognises the progress he makes. These conversations fostered a positive outlook on his future, reinforcing his belief in his potential for further growth.
A nurturing relationship with in-house nurse Leah supports Bradley’s care. He looks forward to her visits, showing newfound comfort during his care that once caused him anxiety.
Family remains central to Bradley’s life. Regular visits with his mum, dad, siblings, and grandparents strengthen their bonds and provide him with cherished moments, whether enjoying a meal out or celebrating special occasions.
Bradley’s journey stands as a testament to his determination and the power of support. As he continues to reach new milestones, he inspires others facing similar challenges. With each step forward, Bradley proves that progress is possible, and the future holds endless possibilities.
