When Anne and Phil made the decision to relocate to Coffs Harbour five years ago, it wasn’t just a lifestyle change — it was a decision made with their son Scotty’s future in mind.

“After high school, Scotty started to go backwards a bit,” Anne explains. “We felt his NDIS funding could be better utilised in a regional area like Coffs. There are fewer people, and strong community connections. That’s exactly what he needed.”
Soon after relocating, the family connected with Ability Options, and Scotty began a steady journey of growth—supported by a dedicated team delivering wraparound services. These integrated supports—including therapy, day programs, direct support, and respite—created a consistent and coordinated environment for Scotty to build real-life skills, confidence, and independence.
“Before Ability Options, Scotty couldn’t cross the road alone,” Phil recalls. “Now, he’s flagging the bus down, chatting with the drivers, and getting himself to where he needs to go. It’s incredible to see.”
One milestone moment that stands out for Anne and Phil was when a mix-up in transport plans left them rushing out to pick him up from the bus stop – only to discover he’d already made it home on his own.

“He was just beaming. So proud of himself,” Anne says. “It was a huge moment for all of us. It showed us just how far he’s come.”
Personal goals with real-world impact
With help from his therapist Sam, Scotty mapped out a personal plan covering seven meaningful goals, from improving communication and personal care to learning financial literacy and catching public transport independently. Each goal connected to something tangible, like confidently ordering dinner on a night out, or navigating the bus to his day program on his own.
His team, including his Occupational Therapist, Behaviour Practitioner, Allied Health Assistant, and Support Workers, work together to embed these skills across his daily life. Whether it’s using self-regulation tools during group activities or role-playing community scenarios, every support is personalised and purposeful.
Money handling, for example, is not just taught in therapy sessions – it’s part of the weekly routine. Scotty plans meals, budgets for ingredients, shops with his Support Worker, and then cooks for the family.
“He’s really taken to cooking,” Anne shares. “He got a cookbook and chef’s hat for Christmas, and now every Sunday he bakes cakes. No eggshells in the mix anymore, that’s a big win for all of us!”
Confidence, connection, and community
Scotty’s confidence has flourished alongside his growing independence. With stronger routines and consistency at home, he now completes daily tasks like dressing, shaving, brushing his teeth, and preparing for the day without prompting.
Socially, he’s thriving too. At his Ability Options Day Program, Scotty has formed friendships and is supported by older participants who look out for him. Karaoke nights and dinners at the pub have become regular highlights, giving him the chance to practise communication skills in fun, relaxed settings.
These outings are more than just good times – they’re moments where Scotty learns, connects, and builds self-esteem.

A brighter, more independent future
For Anne and Phil, the journey with Ability Options has been transformative – not just for Scotty, but for the whole family.
“As we get older, it’s really important to us that Scotty is building the tools to look after himself,” Anne says. “The more independent he becomes now, the more peace of mind we have about his future.”
And while Scotty still has goals to achieve, the momentum is strong, and his enthusiasm is unmistakable.
“He gets so excited in the mornings to catch the bus,” Phil says. “That independence, that sense of pride, it means everything.”
Scotty’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when multi-disciplinary teams work together with a shared vision. Through a person-centred approach and integrated supports, Ability Options is helping Scotty achieve his goals and shape a future filled with confidence, connection, and possibility.
