On Friday, 5th February 2021, WorkReady participants had the opportunity to go on an employment-focused tour at The Sydney Opera House. Participants from Ability Options Parramatta, Penrith, Seven Hills, and Windsor came together for this Industry Day. The guided tour showed participants the behind the scenes work of the Opera House.

The tour started with a history of the Opera House’s construction. Then, the participants had access to a cinema room, to see a clip depicting the experience in the concert hall where participants could appreciate different events at the Opera House.

The group were then guided to the studio theatre and were told about the types of performances held there. The tour guides described the room’s flexibility and how it could be configured in a variety of ways depending on the performance and artist requirements. While in the theatre, the tour guides explained to the participants about the jobs required to set up the scenarios. Participants learned about the work that maintains the theatre before and after a performance.

The participants were shown the box office and the bar looking over the harbour. Participants were then allowed to see a video on the history of the building. The group were also able to access the Joan Sutherland Theatre. The tour guides described the unique design, including Work Health and Safety modifications of the theatre and the different roles required during a show performance.
