Ability Options acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and we pay our respects to Aboriginal Elders past and present. Ability Options recognise the significant contributions made by Aboriginal organisations, community members and individuals in shaping culturally appropriate services.
Ability Options are committed to improving opportunities for people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Currently, close to 10 per cent of the people we support identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. We provide disability employment support to people with disability from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background in Sydney and operate a VTEC (Vocational Education & Training Centre) for Aboriginal people to find long term employment in the Sydney to Illawarra region.
Ability Options have built strong links with Aboriginal communities and Elders, as well as with governments and employers. As an organisation, we are also ‘walking the talk’ with a strategy to recruit people from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. Currently, three per cent of our staff identify as either Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. This exceeds the population representation in our local community.
Uncle Greg Simms is an Aboriginal Elder in Western Sydney. He belongs to the Gadigal (whale people) of the Dharug nation. Uncle Greg is also an Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer with Ability Options Employment at Mount Druitt and actively engages with the local community. Below is a video of Uncle Greg performing a Welcome to Country.
