Four years ago, Mikey found new and consistent support that has helped transform the way he lives his life.
Today, his weeks are filled with football games, music, art, library visits, family celebrations and time with friends. He prepares his own lunch, attends a day program he chose himself and plays an active role in decisions about his support and future goals.
Living with Prader-Willi Syndrome means some aspects of daily life require additional planning and support. With the right support around him, Mikey has built greater independence, stronger relationships and a life filled with choice and opportunity.
His mum, Jo, has witnessed the transformation firsthand.
“Over the past four years, my son has made remarkable progress,” she says.
“He has gradually become much calmer, happier and more emotionally secure. He is now better able to manage change, engage positively with others and enjoy everyday activities.
“The positive changes over the past four years have been significant and have greatly improved his quality of life.”
Building independence
One of Mikey’s proudest achievements has been learning to prepare his own lunch, representing an important step towards greater independence and confidence.
“Well, I make my own lunch,” Mikey says.
Jo credits much of Mikey’s growth to the stability and support he’s received through Supported Independent Living (SIL).
“The stable, consistent and supportive environment has helped him feel safe and secure, which has been essential for his emotional wellbeing,” she says.
Ability Options Practice Manager Merryl says encouraging choice and participation has been key.
“SIL has played an important role in fostering Mikey’s independence by encouraging choice, decision-making and active participation in his daily life.”

Finding connection and community
Since moving to Spring Farm and closer to family, Mikey has strengthened his connections both at home and in the community.
He regularly spends time with his parents, sisters and extended family and recently attended his sister’s wedding — a special milestone he was proud to be part of.
His confidence has also led to new friendships and opportunities.
When Mikey’s previous day program closed, he independently chose to join another provider he had discovered while attending swimming. Since then, he has embraced new experiences including concerts, museum visits, bowling, swimming and music.
“Since commencing with his new day program, Mikey has embraced new experiences with confidence,” Merryl says.
A passionate Rabbitohs supporter, Mikey also loves attending football games and catching up with friends for card games and a little friendly competition.
A moment to be proud of
Among Mikey’s many achievements, one stands above the rest.
Earlier this year, he entered a diamond art creation into the Camden Show—and won.
For Jo, the moment was about much more than the award.
“Winning an art show is now the proudest Mikey has felt,” she says.
“This milestone represents how far he has come.”
Art has become a creative outlet that helps Mikey express himself while building confidence and focus.
“Creating art provides him with a sense of calm, focus and achievement, helping to reduce anxiety and improve his emotional wellbeing.”When asked how he felt about winning, Mikey’s response was simple:
“Happy.”

Having a voice
Another significant part of Mikey’s journey has been becoming more involved in decisions about his own life.
Through a collaborative approach involving Mikey, his family, Ability Options staff and Behaviour Practitioner Kimberley, he has gained confidence in expressing his preferences and shaping his future.
One of Mikey’s goals has been to reduce the supports and safeguards that previously limited his independence. Through a gradual, carefully planned approach involving Mikey, his family and support team, he has built the skills and confidence to make this possible.
One of Mikey’s most significant achievements has been the confidence and independence he has developed while travelling. With support from his family, support team and Behaviour Practitioner Kimberley, he worked towards a goal that once seemed out of reach. Through a carefully planned, step-by-step approach, Mikey gradually built the skills and confidence needed to travel comfortably without a vehicle barrier.
Today, he travels with greater freedom and independence, a milestone that reflects his determination and growth.
Looking ahead
Whether he’s cheering on the Rabbitohs, creating artwork, attending day program or spending time with family and friends, Mikey continues to embrace new opportunities.
According to Merryl, one quality has stood out throughout his journey.
“One of Mikey’s greatest strengths has been his positive attitude and willingness to engage with those around him.”
“His friendly nature and ability to connect with others have played a significant role in his success and happiness.”
As Mikey continues building friendships, exploring new opportunities and pursuing his goals, his story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when a person is supported to grow, thrive and make choices about their own life.
