Across NSW, participants and colleagues have come together to learn, connect and celebrate the rich cultures, histories and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through community celebrations, cultural activities and traditional ceremonies, recent months have been a season of learning and reflection across Ability Options, marking National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week and the launch of our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

Our season of learning began with National Reconciliation Week and a meaningful gathering on the Central Coast, where participants and colleagues came together to recognise the importance of reconciliation and the role each of us plays in creating inclusive communities.
The event was led by Kyle Waters, a Gomeroi man from Wallhallow Mission in North West NSW, who welcomed attendees with a traditional smoking ceremony and shared cultural knowledge and stories with the group.
For many participants, it was an opportunity to experience Aboriginal culture firsthand. They listened, asked questions and explored the meanings behind traditional symbols, artefacts and storytelling, gaining a deeper appreciation for the world’s oldest living culture.

The event also marked the launch of Ability Options’ Innovate RAP, reflecting our ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships, fostering respect and creating meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within our communities.

While the RAP sets an important direction for the organisation, the experiences shared by participants throughout the week showed how reconciliation comes to life through connection, learning and everyday action.
The spirit of connection continued into NAIDOC Week, as participants across our footprint joined events celebrating the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Participants from Seven Hills Day Program attended the Blacktown City NAIDOC Awards Presentation at Whalan Reserve, where community members gathered to celebrate local achievements and share culture through music, dance and storytelling.
As traditional performances by the River People unfolded, participants were immersed in stories reflecting the enduring connection between First Nations peoples and Country. The performances were vibrant and joyful, while also providing an opportunity to learn, reflect and gain a deeper understanding of cultural traditions passed down through generations.
“One of the best parts of the day was the traditional dancing. I loved seeing the story,” says Amanda, a participant from Seven Hills.
Elsewhere, participants in Kempsey joined the local NAIDOC march, standing alongside community members in a celebration of culture and unity. In Coffs Harbour, participants explored Aboriginal art and creative activities, using storytelling and artistic expression to learn about culture while sharing their own perspectives and experiences.
Across activities and locations, a common theme emerged: people coming together to learn from one another and celebrate the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
Whether attending community events, listening to stories shared by Elders, creating artwork or participating in cultural celebrations, participants embraced opportunities to connect with their communities and deepen their understanding of reconciliation.
The enthusiasm and genuine engagement shown throughout National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week demonstrate that progress is built through relationships, respect and a willingness to listen and learn.
Together, these moments mark the beginning of a stronger, more purposeful commitment. Through the launch of our Innovate RAP we look forward to continued learning, listening and taking meaningful action as we walk together towards a more inclusive and reconciled future across the Ability Options community.
