When we first met Selina, she was using a self-purchased basic manual wheelchair which provided limited support, and decreased rather than increased her overall ability to feel independent.
Selina was mostly limited to her home, and many of the components of the wheelchair had rusted. Selina would express feeling “trapped”, and the times that she did venture out were uncomfortable and she felt unsafe.
During Selina’s Occupational Therapy (OT) assessment and prescription of a new manual wheelchair, we remained focused on providing Selina with a wheelchair that not only supported her functional needs, but one that assisted her to achieve her immediate and long term goals.
Because of her new wheelchair, Selina now attends activities in the community several times per week and has made some new friends! With the addition of a lift in her home, Selina is now able to leave the house independently and she has expressed how significant these changes have been in improving her overall quality of life.
