Bakers Delight in Nepean Village was recently contacted by our Customer Service Centre regarding an advertised vacancy for an apprentice baker.
The job was allocated to Daniel Palffy our Employment Liaison Consultant in Penrith who took up the challenge to fill the role. Daniel already had a possible candidate in mind, Jake, who was a direct referral through our School and Community Liaison Officer (SCLO) and had just started his job search, through the DES program with Ability Options the week prior.
Jake had just commenced Cert III Retail Baking at TAFE and was initially a little hesitant at leaving the TAFE course for a job. Daniel met with Jake and discussed all the requirements for the role and Jake met all the criteria. After considering his options and career aspirations, Jake made the decision to apply for the apprenticeship with Bakers Delight.
Daniel organised for Jake to meet with the employer, Kersi Bhesania, from Bakers Delight at 3am Monday morning to give Jake a taste of what a life as a baker, which includes early starts, would be like.
Immediately following his first shift, Jake, Daniel and the employer all met and openly discussed Jake's performance. Jake really enjoyed his first shift and the employer was pleased with Jake's passion for the trade and his interest in learning. Jake was invited to complete the week at Bakers Delight, with the employer stating, if Jake was happy at the end the week, the job is his!
Jake got through his first week successfully and is now employed as an apprentice baker at Bakers Delight.
Further support has been offered to Jake from Jordan, an Aboriginal mentor at Pindarri, who will work closely with Jake on his smooth transition into full time work and any concerns that may arise.
Congratulations Jake, we look forward to dropping by for some delicious baked treats!
