To make a great impression, preparation is key!

  • Research the Company you are going to for an interview. Look on the Company website and ensure you are well prepared and know about the Company and the role. You will have the opportunity to ask questions – think of a question that shows you understand the Company and the role you are applying for.
  • Arrive a little early – plan ahead and make sure you know where you’re going and how long it will take to travel there
  • Know your audience – i.e. the person who is interviewing you. If you can, check them out on LinkedIn or on the company website. Remember the names and positions of the people you are meeting with.
  • Dress appropriately – this doesn’t always mean a suit but wear smart casual business attire. Avoid shorts, thongs or revealing clothing. Be clean neat and appropriate in your presentation for your interview.
  • Go into the interview with a smile. Shake the hands of the people who will be meeting with you.
  • Stick to the point and to the question being asked. Be enthusiastic in your responses and give yourself a plug as you’ll only get one chance to do it. Make sure you have examples on hand, the STAR method is used by most interviewers so you will need to respond by discussing the specific situation, task, action, and result of the situation you are describing.
  • Be authentic! If you’re posed with a tough question like ‘what’s your greatest weakness?’ Be authentic and truthful. Responses like ‘sometimes I over analyse situations’ or ‘sometimes I procrastinate’ show that you are human, given consideration to the question and you are comfortable to admit that you are not perfect and are looking to improve in that area.

Some things to avoid

  • Try to not interrupt the interviewer and jump in before they have finished asking the question or if they are explaining something.
  • Avoid negative comments regarding former employers or colleagues
  • Never lie in an interview be your truthful, authentic self
  • Don’t use offensive language e.g sexually explicit, sexist, racially offensive language or swearing.

Ultimately, by being well-prepared, authentic, and professional, you can increase your chances of making a positive impact in your next job interview.
