What are wage subsidies?

Thanks to government funding, the wage subsidy incentive scheme provides up to $10,000 to help cover the many costs of hiring eligible people looking for work into a sustainable position. It’s available to employers who hire through Ability Options.

Who is an eligible person looking for work?

Up to $10,000 (GST inclusive) may be available for a new employee who is:

  • 15 to 29 years of age
  • An Indigenous Australian
  • 50 years of age and over
  • A parent, or
  • Registered with an employment services provider for 12 months or more

The scheme is offered through a range of initiatives for eligible candidates, including DES and Workforce Australia.

Wage subsidy placements can include full-time, part-time and casual employment, as long as your employees in those positions meet the agreed hours in the wage subsidy agreement: between 8 to 30 hours per week.

Is your business eligible for a wage subsidy?

If you hire a person using our employment service, you may be eligible for up to $10,000 in wage subsidy over a period of six months. Successful employers are also entitled to further funding for workplace modifications for new team members.

To be eligible for a wage subsidy, your business must:

  • Be registered with an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Employ a person registered with Ability Options employment service
  • Ensure the position offered provides ongoing employment, meeting the agreed hours in the wage subsidy
  • Meet employment standards for the position such as ensuring the role offers suitable work and pays the minimum national award wage or relevant award

To be eligible for a wage subsidy, your business must not:

  • Have had a wage subsidy for the same job seeker
