At 21 years old, Grant was introduced to Ability Options thanks to his dad – it was the beginning of a long and meaningful journey. Now a passionate advocate and Deputy Chair of our organisation’s People’s Rights Committee, Grant is not only receiving support but is actively contributing to improving the experience of others.

“I like it so much I continued to stay with them,” Grant proudly shares.

As Deputy Chair of our People’s Rights Committee (PRC), he plays a vital role in representing the voices of fellow participants, offering insight into how services can continue to reflect fairness, dignity, and respect.

Michelle Hodge, Chief Quality, Practice and Assurance Officer, praises Grant as being a valued member of the People’s Rights Committee for several years.

“Grant is enthusiastic, loves to be involved, and is proud of his work on the committee. He encourages people to speak up and learn about their rights, particularly their right to vote,” she says.

Grant has been involved in the co-design of our organisation’s website, easy read documents, and completes policy and process reviews as part of his role. He has  provided valuable insights from his lived experience to Council for Intellectual Disability (CID) and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Last year he presented the Participant Choice Award to the winner at our Annual Star Awards.

Grant’s involvement contributions as a key part of the Committee have helped shape the way our organisation upholds participant’s rights and advocate for greater choice and control over their services in the sector.

When asked to describe Ability Options in a few words, Grant didn’t hesitate.

“Good services, great people.”

Grant has formed lasting friendships and positive experiences within the community, over the years. One of the highlights of his time was living with Barry, a former housemate whom he remembers fondly.

“He was good to me. I’d love to see him again,” Grant shared warmly.

The connection they shared highlights the importance of inclusion and companionship in a supported accommodation setting.

This simple yet powerful sentiment reflects the consistent, person-centred support he has received and the trust he places in the staff who work alongside him every day.

Looking ahead, Grant is proud to continue his journey with the organisation, not just as a participant, but now as a voice of influence and change as well.

“I’m going to stay with the service,” he says with confidence.

Grant’s story is one of progress, passion, and the power of lived experience. From support recipient to a meaningful role within Ability Options, his journey reminds us of what’s possible when people are supported, have choice and control, and are empowered to lead, grow, and shape the future.
