People with disability in Australia face several challenges in the employment sector, resulting in lower participation and higher unemployment rates compared to those without disability. Key issues include lower employment rates, a shift from full to part-time work, and workplace discrimination.

However, some businesses like Gusto’s Home Hub and Chickanji are leading the way in championing inclusive employment for people living with disability. By partnering with providers like Ability Options, they’re helping increase the number of available opportunities in New South Wales.

Gusto’s Home Hub, a NDIS Cleaning and Gardening Service, and Chickanji, a popular family restaurant in South-West Sydney, have both partnered with us to support people with disability into meaningful employment.

Joshua, a participant in our Disability Employment Services (DES), has become known as Gusto’s go-to “Lawn Mower Man”. He shared how his role at Gusto’s has helped him build confidence while giving back to the community.

“When I first came into contact with Gusto’s, I was asked what I was looking for,” he says. “I told them I just wanted an opportunity. I’ll run with it and do the very best I can.”

“I was given a trial under the guidance of an employee, and at the end of the day, I felt like I hadn’t done my best, but I took a moment to recognise this was me getting back into things. Once I got into the swing of it, things improved from there.

“My dad and I always say, ‘If you’re not having fun at work, why are you doing it?’ Some people work just to provide for their families, but for me, I work to help others, to enjoy my day, and do the best I can.”

William, a WorkReady participant with us, came to Gusto’s with a similar goal: to give back, inspired by his experiences with his mum.

“When I was younger, my mum had a stroke and received a lot of help to recover,” he says. “I thought, ‘What if I could find a job like that, where I could help others?’”

“Then I found Ability Options, and they told me about Gusto’s Home Hub and how they support people with disability through gardening and cleaning services. I thought I’d give it a go.

“Going to work and helping people who really need it—it does a lot for me.”

Chickanji owner Mike spoke about how the support from Ability Options, along with his own values of inclusivity, inspired him to offer opportunities to people from all walks of life.

“Our partnership with Ability Options has allowed us to offer meaningful opportunities to people living with disability, and the support we’ve received has been invaluable,” Mike says.

“We’ve always believed in the importance of employee satisfaction, and whenever we can, we’re happy to help. When Christeen from Ability Options’ Employment Services team contacted me and asked if we’d be willing to interview a few people, we agreed.

“It’s never been about just filling a position for us. We want people who care about the work, who are passionate, and who are committed to growing with us.”

By embracing inclusive employment, businesses like Chickanji not only foster a positive, loyal workforce but also enhance customer satisfaction through their team’s genuine passion for the work.

This commitment to inclusivity is reflected not only in the work environment but also in the invaluable support the team receives from Ability Options.

“Christeen has been phenomenal—always there when we need her. If we need to call, she’s on the phone, ready to help with anything, from payslips to following up on other matters. She’s always on top of things, and we really appreciate her support. That’s what resonates with us—genuine care,” Mike says.
