Nicholas’ journey over the past eight years at Ability Options has been truly remarkable. Receiving Direct Support at his Supported Independent Living (SIL) home in the Hunter, he has steadily gained independence and confidence.

Nicholas’ journey hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Through the lens of his Support Worker, Lachlan, we get a closer look at how Nicholas has grown and taken vital steps towards independence to overcome challenges.
“When Nicholas first moved into his new SIL home about a year ago, he was feeling quite anxious and unsettled,” Lachlan recalls.
“He was nervous when he first came here. He’d often be vocal and unsettled, which is typical when someone is adjusting to a new environment.”
With consistent, tailored support over time, things began to change.
“Seeing Nicholas go from being anxious to calm and happy was amazing,” Lachlan says, “It’s been a huge transformation”.
A key focus in Nicholas’ support plan has been helping him regain skills he once managed independently, like feeding himself. While he was able to do this while living with his parents, the transition to supported living brought new challenges.
“We’re working on helping him get back to the practices he used to do when he was at home,” Lachlan says.
It’s all about helping him regain that independence and confidence in doing it.
Lachlan – Nicholas’ Support Worker
Through Direct Support, Nicholas has been taking small but steady steps to rebuild his skills. Though the process has had its difficulties, his support team celebrates every milestone.
“Every time Nicholas feeds himself, it’s a big win,” Lachlan says proudly.
“Seeing him regain that confidence is incredibly rewarding.”
Nicholas’ progress extends beyond the home. He thrives on community engagement and social connection.
“He enjoys going to our day programs,” Lachlan shares, “Whether it’s a walk at the beach or visiting the library, he’s always happy to be out and about.”
A major highlight of Nicholas’ week is spending time with his father.
“He’s extremely approachable and easy-going, and he really loves Nicholas. The relationship he has with John is really special. When Nicholas hears his dad’s voice, he knows straight away who it is and gets the biggest smile on his face.”
The move to Stockton has strengthened that bond even more. “It’s definitely been beneficial for their relationship,” Lachlan explains.
“And not only that, Nicholas has fit in so well here. We’ve got a really positive environment at Stockton, and I think that plays a big part.”
Lachlan shares a recent moment that shows just how far Nicholas has come.
“Only today, I came in to start my shift as Nicholas was arriving home from his day program, and he was so happy and calm – which has been a big goal for us,” he says.

Having been part of Ability Options for eight years, Nicholas has built strong relationships with the broader team and now continues to grow in his new SIL home.
“The team here have really grown to Nicholas, and I feel we’ve grown on him too,” Lachlan says.
As Nicholas continues to flourish through these experiences, the future holds even more promise. Lachlan remains optimistic and enthusiastic about what’s ahead.
“We’re continuing to help Nicholas build on his skills,” he says. “I know he’s going to keep thriving. I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.”
Nicholas’ progress over the past year at Stockton is a powerful reminder that small, steady steps can lead to significant changes. From a place of uncertainty to one of growing confidence, his journey shows the impact of routine, patience, and genuine care from those around him.
“Being part of Nicholas’ journey is special,” Lachlan reflects.
“Watching him grow and seeing the positive impact of our support – that’s what motivates me to keep doing what I do.”
There are plenty more milestones to celebrate ahead – more goals to reach, more skills to build and more moments to enjoy. With the right support, Nicholas is well on his way.
